A new consignment shop opened recently at the site of a former fashion store in Holts Summit.
The Burlap Sack sells used children's, men's and women's clothing. Owner Barb Jones said the store also sells all kinds of household items. Customers wanting to consign items can get 50 percent of what items sell for in cash or store credit. The Burlap Sack also embroiders items including gifts and businesses attire.
"We sell just about everything but furniture," Jones said.
Jones and her husband, Jim, grew up in Jefferson City, but spent the past 25 years living in Troy. Jones spent most of that time as a stay-at-home mom. She also worked as a high school teacher and later spent five years as a church secretary.
The Burlap Sack sits in the space just off U.S. 54 last occupied by Calena's Fashions in Holts Summit.
Calena's Fashions offered clothes for women and had developed a loyal following. After 16 years in business, owner Calene Cooper closed the store at the end of 2017 to retire.
Jones began moving into the space six weeks ago, and The Burlap Sack opened Thursday. Jones said business was busy on the first day. She thinks the community is interested and excited to support the store.
"We've had a lot of interest on Facebook," Jones said. "A lot of people stopped by when we were moving in and setting up to see what was going on."
The Burlap Sack is open each week 7 a.m-5 p.m Tuesday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 7 a.m.-noon Saturday.
