Russellville Elementary raises Knowledge Bowl Cup

Russellville Elementary School proudly raised the Knowledge Bowl Cup after a day of academic competition Wednesday at Lincoln University.

The Indians’ fifth-grade team won first place in their age group, the sixth- and third-grade teams earned second, and the fourth-grade Russellville team came in third, for a combining score that topped teams from South Callaway, Eugene, Tuscumbia, Linn, Fatima, New Bloomfield, St. Elizabeth and Chamois.

The Knowledge Bowl is the only academic competition some of the elementary teams attend throughout the year. The contests pit teams of four students against each other to answer questions in school subjects like science, literature, geography, math and history.

Russellville team sponsor Laurie Koestner said academic competitions offer studious children an opportunity to excel outside the classroom. Students have the chance to be competitive while gaining practice and teamwork skills outside of physical sports.

Knowledge Bowl results are as follows:

• Third grade: first place, South Callaway; second place, Russellville; third place, Tuscumbia.

• Fourth grade: first place, St. Elizabeth; second place, Chamois; third place, Russellville.

• Fifth grade: first place, Russellville; second place, Eugene; third place, Tuscumbia.

• Sixth grade: first place, South Callaway; second place, Chamois; third place, New Bloomfield.
