Extension hosts spring cattle seminars

University of Missouri Extension is planning two ReproGene conferences. This event is designed to help beef producers better understand and utilize technologies related to reproductive management and genetics to improve farm profits, said Anita Ellis, Livestock Specialist at UM Extention in Callaway County.

The ReproGene conference will be led by MU Extension Beef Specialists David Patterson and Jared Decker. Topics of the conference will include an overview of Artificial Insemination Synchronization Protocols for Heifers and Cows, Split-Time Artificial Insemination and Use of Sex-Sorted Semen, Basics of EPD and Genomic Predictions, and How to Use Genetic and Genomic Predictions for Increased Profitability.

To conclude, there will be a panel discussion along with a question-and-answer session.

The first conference will be March 21 at the Mills Center in the Laclede County fairgrounds in Lebanon. The second will be March 26 at the Recklein Auditorium, 202 N. Smith St. in Cuba. Both programs will begin at 4:30 p.m., include dinner and materials, and conclude by 9 p.m.

Beef AI school in Columbia

The University of Missouri Extension in Howard County and Select Sires will be hosting a beef artificial insemination school April 6-7. The school will be at the University of Missouri Beef Research and Teaching Farm, 5151 Old Millers Road, Columbia. The class is $350 and pre-registration is required by March 30.

The school is intended to introduce participants to the art and science of artificial insemination through presentations, videos and hands-on experiences. Topics to be covered include estrous cycle, semen handling, insemination techniques and synchronization protocols. Hands on demonstrations include palpation, identification of reproductive tract, heat detection and insemination techniques.

Beef cattle meeting in Callaway

Join Extension officials at 6 p.m. March 29 for the Beef Cattle Meeting hosted by the Callaway/Montgomery County Cattlemen's Association, University of Missouri Extension Callaway County Office, and MFA. This event will be at the Callaway Livestock Center in Kingdom City. Dinner will be provided followed by the Cattlemen's annual meeting. Two guest speakers are Dr. Craig Payne, DVM at University of Missouri Extension Veterinary Medicine, who will discuss "Current vaccine recommendations for cow/calf operations" and Mike John, director of MFA Health Track Operations, who will discuss "PowerCalf Technology: Measure, Manage, and Win!"
