Holts Summit has started survey and design work on plans to extend the sidewalk along South Summit Drive for about half a mile, running from the intersection of Perrey Drive to East Center Street.

City Administrator Rick Hess said the city paid $47,000 for the engineering work, which is being completed now. Holts Summit will apply for a Transportation Alternatives Program grant to cover the cost of the final project, Hess added, which will run $400,000-$500,000.

Construction will likely be finished by next summer if the city receives the funding.

Hess said Holts Summit will probably shelve the project due to cost if it does not receive a TAP grant, but will look into federal infrastructure grants if they become available. Holts Summit did not receive a TAP grant last year after receiving one for three years in a row.

Hess said the city wants to extend the sidewalk along South Summit Drive to city limits, but must add in sections to keep costs affordable.
