UPDATED: Suspect and victim identified in Jefferson City shooting

Man charged after early morning shooting

Cole County prosecutors Friday afternoon charged one man with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm after an early morning domestic dispute led to another man being shot.

Terrel Williams, 35 on Sunday, 1908 Saratoga Blvd., was being held in the Cole County Jail this weekend, with no bond set.

Police reported officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Saratoga Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Responding officers located the victim - Darren D. Carter, 40, Jefferson City - in the street, with a gunshot wound to the face.

He was listed in critical condition Friday night at University Hospital in Columbia, where he was flown after first being treated at St. Mary's Health Center.

Police said the wound was thought to be non-life threatening.

Police said Carter was shot after he was arguing with a female in a driveway, while Williams was sitting on a retaining wall along the driveway.

Witnesses said Carter then approached Williams and, a short time later, the witnesses heard a gunshot.

Williams fled the scene, but eventually was captured.

He is on probation for St. Louis County convictions of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in January 1996. No details of those crimes were available Friday.
