The outdated kitchens at Dulle Tower Apartments will be renovated, thanks to the persistence of tenants during the last few years.
The Jefferson City Housing Authority Board of Commissioners approved a contract Tuesday with MegAllie Construction Company, which will renovate and modernize the Dulle Tower Apartments' kitchen cabinets and counter tops, along with replacing lateral sewer lines, for $797,000. Renovations are expected to begin in July, Jefferson City Housing Authority Director Cynthia Quetsch said.
The Housing Authority originally planned to replace lateral sewer lines in the apartments, but since the contractor would have to take out some of the kitchen cabinets to reach the pipes, Quetsch said, the commissioners decided it would be more cost-effective to renovate the kitchens at the same time.
"The kitchen cabinets needed to be replaced as the particle board was starting to disintegrate, and some of the cabinet doors did not stay closed," she said. "They (along with the lateral sewer lines) were showing their age. The new cabinets will improve the appearance and functionality of the kitchens."
The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines gave the Housing Authority a $750,000 grant to help offset the cost of the kitchen renovations, and capital funding from the federal government will cover the lateral sewer lines project, Quetsch said.
Due to the extent of the improvements, residents had to relocate to different apartments in Dulle Tower or to other properties until renovations are complete.
