BizBeat: Hy-Vee to launch same-day grocery delivery

Hy-Vee will begin offering same-day grocery delivery service locally this week by partnering with a pair of San Francisco startups.

The grocer announced plans July 10 to partner with Shipt and Instacart to offer same-day grocery delivery in about two dozen markets across the Midwest. Hy-Vee Communications Directory Amy McCoy said Instacart will begin same-day grocery delivery service in Jefferson City on July 24. Shipt will begin service in Jefferson City sometime in September.

Hy-Vee has 245 stores in eight Midwestern states, including its Jefferson City location at 3721 W. Truman Blvd. The grocer already offers online grocery pickup and delivery through its Hy-Vee Aisles Online service.

Similar to Hy-Vee Aisles Online, customers who use the new delivery services will be able to select the items they want to buy then choose a delivery window for their order, but now customers will be able to do so via the Shipt or Instacart apps.

Over the past year, grocers nationwide have been trying to bolster online shopping and delivery services for customers to appeal to young and time-strapped customers. Instacart and Shipt use independent contractors to fill and deliver orders.

Target bought Shipt in December and is planning a nationwide rollout of the service in Target stores.

Last year, Instacart struck a partnership with Schnucks to offer similar same-day grocery delivery service. Walmart also is in the midst of adding online grocery pickup at both of its Jefferson City stores.

"As online grocery marketplaces experience rapid growth, Hy-Vee is matching pace to provide our customers a variety of personalized grocery delivery options," Hy-Vee chief information officer Matt Ludwig said in a news release.
