Charges filed in June weapons offense

A Jefferson City man has been charged in a June weapons offense.

Shavontay Estes, 23, is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

The incident occurred June 25 at the Break Time Convenience Store on Clark Avenue, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

A woman and her son told officers Estes had an argument with the son at the store's gas pumps.

The mother said she saw Estes display a small black pistol and point it at her and her son and Estes had ejected several rounds from the pistol.

The mother pushed her son away from Estes, and she and her son went into the store, she said. When they came out, they found their vehicle had traveled across the street and struck another vehicle.

Store surveillance video show Estes had gotten in the vehicle and the car began to roll away from the pumps.

Later that day, authorities found a vehicle, in which Estes was a passenger, in the 900 block of McClung Park Drive. Estes fled from the vehicle before officers could talk to him.

Authorities searched the vehicle and found a firearm in the glove compartment that matched the one used at Break Time, and they found that it was stolen. Ammunition also was found matching what the weapon would use.

Estes is a convicted felon and has been linked to other weapons offenses.
