California woman charged in Morgan County drugs case

Bond was set Friday at $300,000 for a Moniteau County woman charged in Morgan County with trafficking, or attempting to traffic, drugs - a Class A felony - and with misdemeanor possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana.

Morgan County Prosecutor Dustin Dunklee filed the charges Friday against Jane Marie Suggs, 58, of California, after she was arrested about 1:15 a.m. during a traffic stop on U.S. 50, east of the North Missouri 5 intersection, west of Tipton.

Morgan County Sheriff Norman Dills reported in a news release the initial stop was for a traffic violation, and Suggs consented to officers searching her car.

In that search, Dills said, deputies "seized approximately 103 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana and associated drug paraphernalia."

Dills said the Mid-Missouri Drug Task Force assisted in the investigation.

Conviction of the felony trafficking charge could result in a prison sentence of 10-30 years, or life, while a conviction on the misdemeanor charge carries a maximum punishment of a jail sentence not to exceed one year.

The docket entry on Case.net, the state courts' online case reporting system, says Suggs can be released from jail on a 10 percent cash ($30,000) or surety bond.

But if she's released, the court said, she must "submit to a chemical test or tests of (her) breath, blood, saliva or urine for the purpose of determining the alcohol or drug content of (her) blood at any time requested to do so by any law enforcement or court officer."

If she refuses to take that test, the court said - or if a test is positive - Suggs is to "remain in custody until further order of court."

No court date has been set in the case yet.

It was assigned to Judge James S. Grantham.
