Jefferson City police report seeing an increase in reports of thefts from motor vehicles Monday and Tuesday, prompting them to ask residents and visitors to be diligent about locking their vehicles.

JCPD Lt. David Williams said there have been no forced entries to any of the vehicles.

"Several of our neighborhoods on the city's east side, particularly in the Moreau Drive, Leslie Boulevard and Major Drive areas, have been targeted," Williams said in a news release. "In the early morning hours of July 10, we were contacted by an area resident that advised someone was rummaging through a nearby vehicle. Responding officers located multiple juveniles in the area with items consistent with rummaging through vehicles."

Williams said six juveniles were taken into custody for curfew violations and the investigation into these incidents continues. One of the individuals is an adult, who faces a possible stealing charge.

Police found seven vehicles that had been gone through but believe there might have been more, Williams said.

If residents or visitors find items missing from their vehicles, especially in the previously mentioned areas, they are asked to contact police. The main JCPD phone number is 573-634-6400.
