More than 150 children submitted entries in this year's Black History Month Art Contest.

Organizers of the event held a program Tuesday afternoon to kick off Black History Month.

Youth have been working on their 8.5-by-11 creations recognizing influential African-American historic figures, business leaders, sports participants, activists and celebrities.

During the Tuesday event, youth shared the inspiration behind their portrayals.

Ten finalists were chosen. Their work will be displayed, and the public is invited to vote on their favorite pieces at local U.S. Cellular stores during February.

The event is sponsored by U.S. Cellular and the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City. U.S. Cellular has donated to the local club since 2015, according to a news release.

Based on voting, three winners will be announced during a celebration ceremony in March. First place will receive a gift card for $250. Second will receive a gift card for $150. Third will receive a gift card for $100.
