Filing deadline approaching for April election

January 7th, 2018 by Phillip Sitter and Nicole Roberts in Local News

The deadline is approaching for candidates to file for April elections.

Filing for Jefferson City Council seats is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 16.

Four out of five current City Council members are running for re-election — Ward 1 Councilman Rick Prather, Ward 2 Councilman Rick Mihalevich, Ward 3 Councilwoman Erin Wiseman and Ward 4 Councilman Ron Fitzwater.

Jim Crabtree and Jon Hensley are running for the 5th Ward seat after councilman Larry Henry announced he would not seek re-election in 2018 due to his career expanding.

Before filing, candidates need three endorsements from registered voters in the ward they want to serve. They also must fill out a Missouri Department of Revenue Form 5120 and sign it before a notary, filing that form with the Department of Revenue and providing a copy of it to the city.

After endorsements are verified, candidates must complete a declaration of candidacy form at City Hall, 320 E. McCarty St.

Jefferson City Public Schools and Blair Oaks R-2 Board of Education applications are due by 5 p.m. Jan. 16.

JCPS documents can be picked up and must be returned to the board's secretary, Stephanie Sappenfield, at 315 E. Dunklin St. in Jefferson City.

Blair Oaks filing forms may be obtained at the district office, 6209 Route B in Wardsville.

So far, four candidates have filed for two available seats on the JCPS board: incumbent board members Michael Couty and Pam Murray and new candidates Ken Enloe and Lindsey Rowden.

Incumbent Board Vice President William Duke and member Kevin Ward have filed for reelection to their two available seats on the Blair Oaks board.
