Fulton Public School's superintendent sent out a plea Friday asking parents to help keep students safe.

"Please talk to your children about being safe (and) encourage them to report any discussion of violence or weapons to an adult," Superintendent Jacque Cowherd said. "Parents are also encouraged to report rumors of violence or weapons to law enforcement by dialing 911."

Cowherd sent the statement in response to the Wednesday school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and the news a juvenile was caught bringing a gun to school in Centralia Friday.

According to the Associated Press, Centralia Superintendent Darin Ford said administrators at Centralia High School took a handgun and ammunition from the student's backpack Friday morning. The student was entering the school at the time, and was arrested without incident. Other students reported the weapons and ammunition to school officials, the AP reported.

Cowherd also reviewed the safety measures already in place at FPS.

"District wide 'active shooter' training is conducted annually for all staff (including) teachers, custodians, bus drivers, food service, (paraprofessionals)/aides and secretaries," he said. "Our current training is provided by the Callaway County Sheriff's Department with support of other area law enforcement agencies."

FPS also works closely with the Fulton Police, Cowherd said.

He said all buildings, along with transportation, have protocols on how to address emergencies including active shooters. Administrators regularly review and practice the protocols with staff, Cowherd added.

All buildings have controlled electronic access, and students are told not to open doors for anyone.

"Student safety is (a) community concern and a top priority for Fulton Public Schools," Cowherd added.
