Ameren warns of phone scam

Ameren Missouri is warning its customers of a phone scam that aims to defraud them by threatening to cut off services due to an overdue bill.

The scam, which has happened several times in recent years, involves a phone call from a person posing as Ameren representative attempting to get a payment over the phone. They claim if the bill isn't paid, then a crew will come out and shut off service.

Those who have received these calls say the caller couldn't provide an Ameren account number and the amounts for the bills are questionable.

Ameren officials said about 1,500 customers are targeted by similar scams every year. The company said the scammers not only reach out by phone, but also come to homes or businesses in person and via email.
