Lincoln University's Board of Curators last week approved several changes to the memorandum of understanding over operations to The Linc wellness center on the LU campus.

The center is a joint operation between LU and Jefferson City's Parks, Recreation and Forestry department.

The Parks Commission will be asked to approve the changes at their meeting Tuesday.

"We are nearing the one-year anniversary of the opening of The Linc," LU Athletic Director John Moseley explained. "As part of that anniversary, the current MOU needed to be modified with some updates, to kind of close some loopholes and address some of the issues."

The changes were proposed after a series of meetings involving both Lincoln and city staff members, and include revisions to the naming and sponsorship rights and sponsorship pricing for "major interior spaces" in the facility - such as $50,000 for naming the President's suite, $10,000 for putting a name or logo on the scoreboards for five years, and $25,000 for naming each of the building's five classrooms.

Moseley told curators the new language mentions sponsorships and doesn't designate naming rights.

Another revision in the MOU involves sharing of costs for the fitness equipment with any income to be shared equally.

Curators President Marvin Teer, who is an attorney, suggested a future change in the MOU language should address what happens when there's a "tie" on the Facilities Advisory Committee - which has equal representation from Lincoln and the Parks department - and the parties are seeking different solutions.

The amended agreement said the committee will include Lincoln's athletics director, wellness director and the executive director of Facilities and Planning, as well as the city's Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department director, assistant director and senior management analyst.

The amendments to the MOU also would "limit activities and outside rentals to programs that promote Recreation and Wellness."

The revised agreement adds: "Events unrelated to Wellness initiatives, such as vendor fairs, concerts, trade shows, weddings, etc. shall be discouraged due to blocking gym access," and says any such event must be approved by the Facility Advisory Committee.

Curators didn't discuss specific events targeted by the language change, but The Linc has been used for a Boys & Girls Club event and a Bridal Fair, among other things.

Moseley also said both Lincoln and the Parks department are "trying to limit the number of days the facility is closed when students are in session."

Teer noted: "It's fair to say that the relationships is amicable" between LU and the city involving Linc operations.
