Jefferson City man charged in drug-related shooting

A Jefferson City man has been charged after a drug-related shooting last week.

Benjamin Travis, 29, is charged with delivery of a controlled substance.

The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. Jan. 30 in the 1300 block of West McCarty Street, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

A man suffering from two gunshot wounds was found in a vehicle officers stopped driving away from the shooting scene.

The victim told police he and some friends were planning to purchase marijuana from Travis and he was shot during the transaction.

While searching the area, officers found a mason jar containing 91 grams of marijuana. A search of Travis' apartment turned up narcotics packaging material and a scale.

Investigators spoke Friday with witnesses who had been at the shooting who said the jar belonged to Travis and it was common knowledge that he regularly sells marijuana. One witness allowed officers to search a cellphone, and text messages sent by Travis talking about drug transactions were found.

When interviewed by police, Travis denied any knowledge of marijuana being in his apartment or sale of any narcotics.
