Hallie Thomson, a native of High Point in Moniteau County, has announced her candidacy for the 4th District of the U.S. Congress.

Hallie Thompson, a Moniteau County native, announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Congress in Missouri's 4th Congressional District on Wednesday at the Moniteau County Courthouse in California.

Thompson, who works as a plant scientist, said the experience from that work and her family's farm in the High Point area inspired her to run in the Aug. 7 primary to challenge incumbent Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler in the November election.

"Moniteau County is where I grew up," Thompson said. "I'm excited to announce my candidacy for Congress in a place that's so important to me. We lived down the road from High Point on Highway CC. My mom, aunt and grandparents live here; and my dad's parents still own the farm I grew up living on. I'm proud to represent this community and take the values I learned growing up here to D.C."

She is running on a platform which seeks to restore the ties between farmers and their communities, as well as help protect local producers. She also wants to invest in Missouri's future through programs to expand broadband access, improve access to quality health care and support public education.

Thompson said she believes government policies should be designed to help protect Missourians while lessening the administrative burdens of complex regulations for family farmers and small business owners.
