Anderson files for municipal judge

The race for municipal judge turned into a three-way contest Thursday afternoon.

Tim Anderson filed for municipal judge, adding his hat to the race. He will face candidates Brian Stumpe and Angela Silvey.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity to use some of the experiences I’ve had and hopefully be a benefit to people here in Jefferson City,” Anderson said.

Anderson served as an assistant attorney general for Missouri for 29 years, prosecuting various crimes like murder, assault and drug-related cases.

Through this experience, Anderson said, he knows how to interact with those involved in court and that is his strength.

“I’ve been blessed with a variety of experiences, being in court, seeing people and prosecuting people for wrongdoings,” he said. “I’ve had an opportunity to interact with people who come through this system. I think that is a strength of mine, interacting with (people) and being firm yet fair.”

While he didn’t have ideas for how to improve municipal court yet, Anderson said, he would look for ways to enhance the court, if elected.

Anderson ran for the Cole County associate circuit judge position earlier this year, losing the August primary election to current Municipal Court Judge Cotton Walker. Walker went on to win the associate circuit judge position in November and will take over the position in January.

Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin, with the Jefferson City Council’s approval, plans to appoint Silvey as the temporary municipal court judge Monday. Silvey will serve as interim municipal judge from Jan. 1 to April 2, when voters elect a municipal judge.

City election filings for the April 2 ballot began Tuesday and will continue until 5 p.m. Jan. 15.

Before a candidate files for a city office, he or she must have three endorsements from residents of the area the candidate wants to represent. He or she must also present a Missouri Department of Revenue form 5120 to the city. Candidates are required to sign the form before a notary and file it with the DOR.
