Filing for municipal elections opening soon

The filing period for municipal elections will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 320 E. McCarty St.

Filing will remain open during regular business hours at City Hall; the period will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Mayor Carrie Tergin, Ward 1 Councilman David Kemna, Ward 2 Councilwoman Laura Ward, Ward 3 Councilman Ken Hussey, Ward 4 Councilman Carlos Graham, Ward 5 Councilman Mark Schreiber and City Prosecutor Brian Stumpe will be up for re-election in April.

Voters will also elect a municipal court judge in April.

Since current Municipal Court Judge Cotton Walker will take over his new position as Cole County associate circuit judge in January, Tergin will appoint a temporary judge who will serve Jan. 1 to April 2.

The mayor serves a four-year term, while council members, municipal judge and city prosecutor all serve two-year terms.

Before a candidate can file for office, he or she must have three endorsements from residents of the area the candidate wishes to represent, as well as Missouri Department of Revenue Form 5120 which candidates are required to sign before a notary and filed with the DOR. The law mandates a copy of the form be provided to the city before the candidate is allowed to complete the paperwork to file for office.

Candidate endorsement forms, links to DOR Form 5120, and other pertinent information are found on the city clerk’s “Elections” page at jeffersoncitymo.gov/government/city_elections.php.

Those with questions may also visit the clerk’s office at City Hall or call 634-6311.
