Man charged with twice being physically violent against woman

A Jefferson City man has been charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon and felony and misdemeanor counts of domestic assault after he allegedly twice threatened or physically attacked a woman.

Luke D. Thompson, 24, has been charged in Cole County court after he was allegedly violent against a former girlfriend.

A Cole County Sheriff's Department deputy met with a woman Sunday because she wanted to report a domestic assault from a former boyfriend she identified as Thompson, according to a probable cause statement from the Sheriff's Department.

The woman told the deputy that on one occasion Thompson had held a firearm to her head and assaulted her on another occasion.

She said that on May 9 she arrived at Thompson's home - at a time unspecified in the probable cause statement - where she and he got into an argument. During the verbal altercation, the woman alleged Thompson "threw beer on her and spit on her," adding that he appeared intoxicated.

She said Thompson retrieved a handgun and placed the muzzle against the side of her head.

After she convinced Thompson to unload the gun, she left with Thompson because she felt forced to. She said he had the gun with him but never showed it. The two continued to argue until approximately 11 p.m., when they returned home.

The woman told the deputy that on June 26 she and Thompson were driving in the area of Wardsville looking at apartments to rent, adding that while she drove, Thompson started consuming intoxicants.

The two began to argue while driving in a rural area, and, near Russellville, Thompson asked the woman to stop the vehicle so he could urinate.

The woman said she tried to drive away while he was out of the car, "as she was in fear of him."

She said Thompson was able to get back in the vehicle, though, and he slapped and choked her.

They drove to California, and she said he threatened her life and then returned home in Cole County.

Thompson was arrested Sunday at about 3:30 p.m. He admitted to spitting and throwing beer on the woman but denied pointing a firearm at her. He asked for legal counsel at that point.

Thompson was charged Monday with the class E felony of unlawful use of a weapon and the class A misdemeanor of domestic assault in the fourth degree for the alleged May 9 incident, and the class E felony of domestic assault in the third degree for the alleged June 26 incident.
