Miller County deputy killed in traffic crash

The Missouri Highway Patrol confirmed Saturday that a Miller County Sheriff's Department Deputy was killed in a two vehicle crash Friday evening in Miller County.

Patrol reports show the crash occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Route Y, just north of Rabbit Hill Road.

Deputy Casey Shoemate, 26, of Eldon, was going south on Route Y with his emergency lights and sirens activated. He attempted to pass another vehicle that was southbound and struck a northbound vehicle, driven by Robert Levin, 65, of Florissant, head-on.

Shoemate was pronounced dead at the scene. Levin was taken by helicopter to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia for treatment of serious injuries. Both drivers were wearng seat belts.

The patrol said Shoemate had been with the Miller County Sheriff's Office for about a year.
