The Sconce family and the South Callaway Booster Club have joined efforts to host the Braeden Sconce Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 8 at the Railwood Golf Course in Holts Summit.

The event is being held in place of the annual Bulldog Classic Golf Tournament. Proceeds will be split between the booster club and the Braeden Sconce Memorial Scholarship, which will give out a total of $8,000 to six area seniors this year.

The tournament will include a four-person scramble for all ages and costs $100 per person or $400 per team. There will be putting contests, hole-in-one contests and 50-50 raffles.

Sponsorship opportunities for the tournament are available, include hole sponsorships for $150 and premiere sponsorships for $500.

Braeden Sconce died earlier this year from injuries sustained in a car accident Feb. 4. For almost a month, Braeden's family stayed by his side and the community rallied around him to the inspiration of many before his death. Braeden graduated from South Callaway High School in 2017 after being captain of the football team, co-captain of the golf team and class president.

Braeden's mother, Shelly Sconce, said the family decided to create the scholarship in memory of the kind of person Braeden was.

"What we wanted to maintain as a focus for this scholarship is about legacy because that has been, if anything, one thing that is so abundant in this loss and this tragedy is that - man, that kid was here for 19 years, but he packed those 19 years with good things to the community and good things to people," Shelly said.

Applications for the scholarships are due Friday. Two seniors from South Callaway High School will receive $2,000; and one student each from Southern Boone, New Bloomfield, North Callaway and Montgomery County high schools will receive $1,000.

Shelly Sconce said each school played a role in Braeden's life or supported him and his family after the accident. It isn't certain what the scholarship will look like in the future, she added, but the golf tournament and other fundraising events will help keep it going.

The scholarship application requires an essay and a testimony from another person, both of which should show the legacy a student has built. Shelly said the committee to choose recipients is made up of five people who have been an important part to supporting Braeden's family and community - including two of Braeden's siblings.

"We'll spend our lifetime paying tribute to the people who supported us through this process, paying them back or paying it forward, or however we can show the impact it's had on us," Braeden's father, Wes, said during an interview in February. "We'll spend the rest of our live making sure we are good stewards."
