Jefferson City Police Department Capt. Doug Shoemaker confirmed Wednesday he is a candidate to become police chief in Grand Junction, Colorado.

"I feel very honored that I am in consideration for that position and proud to be a part of the process given the outstanding credentials and police experience of all of the finalists," Shoemaker said. "I look forward to the next steps in the process within the coming weeks."

Earlier this week, the city of Grand Junction announced Shoemaker was one of four finalists for the job. They said more than 30 people from across the country applied for the job.

Shoemaker and the other candidates have been invited to interviews and meet with city and civic leaders in Grand Junction next week.

Shoemaker is second in command of the Jefferson City Police Department and responsible for detectives, narcotics, community services, traffic and public affairs. He has been with the department for 25 years, including 12 at the command level.

Shoemaker also is course director/adjunct instructor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he delivers executive-level police courses.
