Bulky item pick-up begins next week

Starting next week, Republic Services will pick up bulky items as part of Jefferson City's annual spring clean-up day.

Bulky item pick-up for residences west of U.S. 54 begins Monday, and for those east of U.S. 54 begins April 23.

The yearly spring clean-up day service is free for residential customers in city limits.

Items can be placed by the curb the Sunday before pick-up, according to the city's website. This includes furniture, televisions, microwaves, mattresses, large items that two people can easily pick up and tied bundles of scrap materials under 4 feet.

Items not accepted include household trash, bags or boxes of debris, loose piles of material, remodeling material, appliances, car parts, yard waste, lumber or guttering more than 4 feet, rocks, bricks, concrete, flammable material, acid batteries, or household hazardous waste.

Trash and recycling carts will be picked up on regular collection days.

The bulky item pick-up service is provided as part of Jefferson City's solid waste agreement with Republic Services.

Republic Services can pick up large, bulky items at any time during the year for a fee. Residents can call Republic Services at 635-8805.

Property owners must clean up items left behind by Republic Services or risk a property maintenance violation.

Republic Services picked up almost 500 tons during the 2017 spring clean-up, according to the city's website.

While Republic Services will not pick up household hazardous materials, residents can schedule appointments at the Cole County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. It is open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 25, May 16, Sept. 12 and 26, and Oct. 10.

Cole County residents can call 573-634-6410 to schedule an appointment and learn where the drop-off location is.

Hazardous materials include oil-based paints, acids, car/boat/tractor batteries, bleach, brake fluid, handheld rat/mouse poison, and swimming pool chemicals. Correction: The bulky items pickup begins Monday for those west of U.S. 54 and continues on April 23 for those east of U.S. 54. The original version of this article gave the incorrect location for April 23. The error has since been corrected in the text above.
