Tributes planned to fallen firefighters

The Fire Marshal 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be Sunday as a way for firefighters and the community to honor the New York City firefighters who gave their lives following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The event is scheduled 7 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Missouri State Fire Marshal Office in the Jefferson State Office Building at the corner of Jefferson Street and East Capitol Avenue in Jefferson City.

Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing the equivalent of the 104 stories of the World Trade Center. The stairwells will be lined with photographs of each of the firefighters who died on 9/11.

Opening ceremonies will feature the Magic Dragon Pipes and Drums from the Lake of the Ozarks area, as well as retired FDNY Lt. Joe Minogue.

Minogue became one of the FDNY buglers after 9/11. Shortly after his promotion, he was made the commanding officer for the FDNY Ceremonial Unit. He retired from the FDNY in November 2008 but is now active with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Organizers said the tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of FDNY brothers, but symbolically completes their journey to save others and ensures each of the 343 firefighters is honored and won't be forgotten.

All proceeds from the event will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Individual climber registration costs $35.
