JC man gets probation for domestic assault

A Jefferson City man was placed on three years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to charges related to a domestic assault in March.

Trey Garrett, 22, was charged with second-degree domestic assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Officers were called to the 500 block of East Capitol Avenue for a report of gunshots heard, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

When officers arrived, they found a woman and her two small children outside a residence in the 100 block of Marshall Street, just down from where the shots were heard.

Garrett, the woman's boyfriend, had fled the area by the time officers arrived.

The woman told police Garrett had kicked in the front door of her residence. Once inside, he beat the woman with his fists and pistol-whipped her and one of her children.

The woman escaped and fled the residence, running with her children in her arms. While running toward Marshall Street, Garrett exited the residence and fired four shots at the woman and the children with a .38-caliber handgun.

The woman and children were taken to Capital Region Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Her 1-year-old daughter was treated for a concussion, and the woman was treated for injuries to her head and neck.

At the hospital, officers got Garrett's cellphone number and had the cellphone company ping the phone. In a few hours, Garrett was located and taken into custody.

Until Garrett was in custody, the hospital was on lockdown as a safety precaution for the victims.

A witness told police she heard loud arguing while parked in the 100 block of Marshall and saw Garrett jump into a car and tell those with him to "get out of here - the police are coming." The witness also said she saw Garrett holding a silver handgun.

When interviewed by officers, Garrett denied any knowledge of the assault and denied having a handgun.
