Moniteau County hazard update planning meeting held

The first countywide meeting to update the Moniteau County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan was held May 23.

Conducted by the Mid-Missouri Regional Planning Commission, representatives from local government entities and many organizations to begin the task of determining the adequacy of the current plan and making any changes, and updates necessary to bring the 2017 Moniteau County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan adequate for the measures needed and compliant with requirements.

Future meetings will do an overview of all hazards, and the risk assessment of those hazards. FEMA considers hazard mitigation planning vital, and has made federal hazard mitigation funds contingent upon a comprehensive Hazard Mitigation Plan. Without a plan on file with FEMA, communities will be unable to apply for federal hazard mitigation funds.

Possible hazards, and the adequacy of warning and preparedness considered, include floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, winter storms, drought, wildfires and more. Other points considered include overall population, age of that population, the location of job and occupation opportunities, and the distance of travel to those work places.
