It's a hot, sunny Saturday with no clouds in the sky and barely a breeze to ripple the Oestreich Municipal Pool in Fulton.

The weather soon changed, but when the pool opened for the season at noon and the first children jumped in, everything was perfect.

"Actually I feel kind of excited, but I didn't expect it to be this cold," Aiden Johnson said.

When Johnson, 9, was the first child in the pool, followed closely by his siblings Carter and Kaitlynn.

According to Aiden, he'll be back many times over the summer. His favorite way to jump in is via the diving board.

"I used to do belly flops but it hurt my stomach," he said.

His brother, Carter, is all about the cannonballs.

Lifeguards carefully watched the scene, soaking up the start of summer.

"As far as summer jobs go, being in the sun is pretty great," Rachel Quick, a high school student, said.

It's her third year lifeguarding, she said. Previously, she coached soccer for Parks and Recreation and got to know the pool's supervisor. Eventually, she decided to apply to be a guard.

"This is a pretty quiet day so far, but we'll see how it is in a few hours," Quick said.

In the concession stand, fellow high school student Nika Arnn took stock of this year's new offerings.

"We've got different options for ice cream and chips," Arnn reported. "I think the ice cream options this year are better than last year."

Concession stand customers can now enjoy bagged popcorn and pretzels, along with that quintessential summer frozen treat, the Bomb Pop.

It's Arnn's second year manning the stand. She said she enjoys the job because it offers her the chance to chat with customers and make friends with her coworkers.

The pool is located adjacent to Fulton High School. Hours and prices can be found at bit.ly/2s29lKP. The deadline to sign up for swim lessons is June 29; visit fultonmo.org or the Parks and Recreation Department at City Hall to sign up.
