Free energy fair offered Monday

NEW BLOOMFIELD - A local energy fair will show the public how to be a little more "green" next Monday.

"Every year we hold two of these energy fairs, free to the public," Missouri Renewable Energy Site and Regional Supervisor Mike Speaks said. "We will show them how to build alternative housing, like dome homes, and teach them other ways to save money."

The 10 a.m.-3 p.m. event will be at the Mid-America Renewable Energy Center, 9810 State Road AE, New Bloomfield.

Missouri Renewable Energy is a nonprofit organization and a division of New Life Evangelistic Center.

Speaks said the fair will feature a variety of money and energy saving techniques, including:

Wind generators

Photovoltaic solar panels

Bio-diesel production from used vegetable oil

Sustainable building techniques like earth and dome homes

Raised-bed gardening

Aquaponics with raising tilapia fish

Rainwater harvesting

Solar cookers and more.

"We do a lot with renewable energy here," he said. "We want people to come out, free of charge, and view what we do, and what they could start doing."

Another feature at this year's event, Speaks said, will be a demonstration of motovoltaic energy by Tom Day.

"It is a process of generating electricity using magnets," he said. "Tom Day is very good in his field."

The MORE's location in New Bloomfield is a renewable resource heaven, as well as a men's homeless shelter, Speaks said.

"Yes, we live here," he said. "While we are not totally off grid, we do everything we can to cut costs. This location provides room and board for some men who would be on the streets otherwise. We give them a place to get God in their lives and get their lives together."
