Officials ordered the Governor Office Building evacuated after some workers in the building smelled smoke Thursday afternoon.

The Jefferson City Fire Department sent several trucks to the 200 Madison St. building, on the southwest corner of Madison Street and East Capitol Avenue, and they put tape across the doors to keep people from going back inside.

The building is privately owned but houses some state offices, including the Missouri Public Service Commission.

The Columbia-based Missouri School Boards Association also has an office in the building, which originally was the Governor Hotel.

No injuries were reported immediately, as firefighters searched for the cause of the smoke.
