Holts Summit man charged with drug possession, resisting arrest

Cole County prosecutors charged a Holts Summit man Sunday with felony drug possession, resisting arrest and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jefferson City police arrested Corey L. Byrd Jr., 27, after he ran from a car police were pursuing, because they had seen him in it and already had a warrant for his arrest.

Police said Byrd was a passenger in the car, and jumped out of the vehicle when it stopped on the shoulder of a road. Byrd allegedly then ran down a hill and into an open field, where he was caught and arrested.

In their probable cause statement, officers said Byrd was carrying a digital scale and several syringes.

When they searched the path Byrd had followed while running, police said, they also found a glass pipe and a plastic bag containing a crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Officers searched the car Byrd was riding in, they said in the statement, and found a spoon with white residue on it, on the seat where Byrd had been sitting, and another bag with more white crystal later identified as meth.

Byrd's bond was set at $10,000, cash or surety.

Prosecutors said Byrd is a prior offender, with a 2007 conviction in Callaway County for second-degree arson and burglary.
