The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau has ordered 31 custom bike racks to be placed around the city to promote a more welcoming environment for bicyclists.

The "Discover JC" bike racks will have two different designs. Thirty of the bike racks will have an upside-down U-shape, while another bike rack will be a V-shape.

Discover Jefferson City Foundation - a volunteer group that works with the CVB to promote tourism in Jefferson City - funded the project, which costed a little under $9,000 for the 31 bike racks.

During Monday's CVB board meeting, Executive Director Diane Gillespie said the she wants to place the the V-shaped rack at bike plaza at the corner of Clay and Main streets. The bike racks currently there would be moved to another location.

The CVB is working with the city to decide where to place the other bike racks.

Businesses can purchase these custom bike racks for the front of their buildings. A more compact bike rack is $300, and a larger rack costs $1,350.

Those who wish to purchase a bike rack can contact Gillespie at 573-632-2820 or [email protected].
