First Student to host recruiting event as school nears

First Student will host a back-to-school event Thursday to tout the safety of its buses for the community, and to recruit some new drivers to serve Jefferson City Public Schools.

"We're always hiring," said Frank Underwood, location manager for First Student in Jefferson City. He said there's not a specific number of positions open, but First Student continuously hires. Even excess drivers could help out at other locations with services like chartered buses and school trips.

First Student transports more than 6,500 students in the Jefferson City School District every school day.

First Student representatives will be available Thursday to answer questions and conduct interviews with prospective bus drivers, according to a news release.

This will all happen 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Community Room at Capital Mall. Parents and children from the community will also have the opportunity to tour a First Student bus and get coloring sheets from Safety Dog, the safety mascot for First Student.

Prospective bus drivers must be at least 21 years old, able to pass all background checks and drug screens, have at least three years of driving experience, and possess a valid state driver's license.

In addition to the technical qualifications, Underwood said generally First Student looks for people who get along well with children, have safety first and foremost on their minds, and are energetic. "We love people that like to talk," and even if not, somebody who can learn how, he said.
