California aldermen approve bid to replace fire house roof

The California Board of Aldermen accepted a bid Monday for a new roof for the city's fire station. After considering the two bids received, the council approved the bid of $14,400 by DRG Construction. The work is to begin soon.

The council was informed that the city's 2016 sanitary sewer replacement project is more than 70 percent complete. The council approved an additional payment of $141,422.32 to Lehman Construction LLC for additional work completed. The work to place 3,000 feet of pipe is being done in the vicinity of Howard and Smith streets and north of Bonecutter's Body Shop. It appears the work will be completed before the Aug. 6 completion date.

The council decided to drop the company currently being used for city employee uniforms. Instead, clothing will be purchased and provided as needed. Boots, which were to be provided annually, are now to be purchased and issued as needed. Shirts are to have the city logo and name on them.

The council also discussed preliminary information on the cost of possible curbside recycling in California. Currently, the city offers recycling through Boonslick Industries. Dumpsters, carts and a binned trailer east of the city hall building for paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal recycling are open for public use. The city pays $720 a year for the service.

To begin curbside recycling, 90-gallon carts at more than $60 each would need to be purchased, as well as a recycling truck - estimated to cost about $150,000. Disposal would cost an additional $20 a ton, with the total tonnage unknown. One specialist said residents would have reduce the current twice-a-week trash pickup to once a week.

For the present, the city will check with Boonslick Industries to see whether they can set up a second drop-off point for recyclables somewhere else in the city.
