City meetings this week to discuss East Capitol project

Jefferson City history, a historic neighborhood and historic preservation will be the subjects of two separate meetings Tuesday evening at City Hall.

The City Council and the city's Housing Authority will host an open public forum in the City Council Chambers beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Members of the two bodies are depending on the public feedback they hope to receive to guide them in prioritizing structures destined for attention in the East Capitol Avenue Area Urban Renewal Plan.

"This will be a listening session where the public has an opportunity to express its views on prioritizing the properties to be acquired as the urban renewal plan is implemented," Housing Authority Executive Director Cynthia Quetsch said.

The Housing Authority will accept written comments about the East Capitol urban renewal project until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday via email at [email protected] or by mail at 1040 Myrtle Ave., P.O. Box 1029, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102-1029.

An hour after the start of the joint City Council-Housing Authority meeting and one floor below, the Historic Preservation Commission will gather in City Hall's Thomas Jefferson Conference Room.

The City Council, at its meeting last week, was reminded the Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for reviewing the proposed demolition of any Jefferson City structure 50 years or older. The East Capitol Avenue urban renewal area includes 116 parcels, 42 of which are 100 years or older and 88 of which are 90 years or older.

At its meeting Tuesday, the Historic Preservation Commission will consider a demolition application for the structure at 601 Madison St. and a status review of the structure at 811 Adams St.

Other agenda items include a call for applications for the Landmark Award, discussion of the Gregory Stockard Distinguished Service Award and a review of the city's demolition plan. The posthumous Stockard award honors the former president of Historic City of Jefferson.
