A user's guide to the Wellness Center

The public soon will have its first chance to try the glistening basketball courts, computerized fitness center apparatus and other amenities of the University Wellness and Parks Multi-Purpose Recreation Center on the Lincoln University campus in Jefferson City.

The center, a joint project funded by Jefferson City Parks and Lincoln University, is tentatively expected to open to the public at 6 a.m. Feb. 20 for a so-called soft opening. 

Here are some of the details of how the center will operate.

Hours

6 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays

6 a.m.-9 p.m. Fridays

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays

Noon-10 p.m. Sundays

 

Timeline

Construction begins: Feb. 15, 2015

Building completed: Jan. 30, 2017

First event: Feb. 18

Soft opening: Feb. 20

Grand opening: March 24

Activities will include facility tours, basketball and volleyball mini-clinics, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, etc.

 

Fees

LU students: Tuition includes an activity fee.

Public: Access options include daily passes and annual memberships

Day passes: Adults, $5. Youth (17 and under) and senior (60 and over), $3. Family, $15

Yearly passes: The availability of yearly passes is being discussed.

Other uses

Rooms in the Wellness Center can be booked by members of the public. The method is the same as renting other park facilities: contact front desk at 573-634-6482 or visit 1299 Lafayette St. after Feb. 16.

Fee structure

Small room: $20 per hour/$40 with alcohol

Large room: $25 per hour/$50 with alcohol

Two-room combo: $45-50 per hour/$90-100 with alcohol

Three-room combo: $70 per hour/$140 with alcohol

AV equipment: $10 flat fee

 

Who pays what?

Total construction cost: $11.1 million

Parks' share: $6.5 million from park sales tax

Lincoln's share: $4.6 milion, with $4 million from a gift

Day-to-day expenses: Parks and Lincoln to share expenses 50-50, except for the basement, for which Lincoln pays $100 percent because it is for use by LU athletics.

 

Access

Accessible to everyone: Courts, walking track, fitness center and meeting rooms.

Accessible to LU athletics only: Basement space

LU classes: University enrollment policies will be applied when school classes are being held in dedicated classrooms on the second floor.

 

Parking

More than 400 parking spaces surround the center, under the jurisdiction of the Lincoln University Police Department.
