Around the fringes of Beks restaurant Tuesday evening in downtown Fulton, serious shoppers scanned tables laden with what they hoped were good deals.

While there were items including glassware, art and baked goods - even a small, antique wooden sewing chest - there was one silent auction item drawing a lot of attention.

"They could win a condo in Keystone, Colorado, for a week," Our House homeless shelter Director Brad Sheppard said.

In all, the event offered 65 items, even a walnut mantel clock handmade by Auxvasse resident Tom Young.

"It's all donated," he said of the items available.

Our House has held this holiday event for six years, and last year it raised about $4,000.

Board President Rachel Salmons said there is also a local-food dinner in the spring and a back-to-school barbecue in August.

"We are the only homeless shelter in Callaway County," she said. "We offer services not only in Fulton but the whole Callaway County area."

About 125 people each year are supported by Our House programs.

"And 10-20 a year are children," Sheppard said.

Last year's silent auction had to be postponed because of icy weather, but this year's event went off without a hitch.

Tina Hines wanted to bid on a colorful baby quilt, but was reluctant to compete with her friend Joyce Airaghi, who already had her eye on it.

"I have a grandson who would love that," she said, shrugging. "I'll find something else."
