Ward 3 Councilwoman Erin Wiseman plans to run for a second term on the Jefferson City Council in 2018.

Wiseman was elected to the council in 2016.

"Coming in for my third year, I have a lot to build on and a lot of base knowledge, so I'm pretty excited about that," she said. "There are so many things you have to build on those first two years - there are so many procedures. During the first year, you're just trying to be a sponge and learn that."

Wiseman is the chair of the Council Committee on Administration and said that experience helped her learn the procedures and how to move things forward, such as discussions on short-term rentals.

Wiseman said because she has been on the council for the past few years, she has background information on certain topics. For example, she wants the city to continue discussing long-term solutions for stormwater infrastructure problems.

"We need to start thinking of something sustainable so that taxpayers aren't also paying for problems on their own properties, so we need to make sure stormwater is a priority for us," she said.

Along with stormwater, Wiseman said, she wants to focus on nuisance and property code issues in Ward 3 and the city, noting the number of violations has increased over the last few years. Jefferson City had more than 3,000 property code violations in the 2017 fiscal year, according to city staff.

"We need to continue focusing on those to make sure properties are being well kept and people aren't doing things to reduce values of the homes in the neighborhood or obstruct other people's uses in the neighborhood," she said.

Other council seats up for re-election in 2018 are Rick Prather's Ward 1 seat, Rich Mihalevich's Ward 2 seat, Ron Fitzwater's Ward 4 seat and Larry Henry's Ward 5 seat. Henry has said he will not run for re-election.

Candidates need three endorsements from registered voters in the ward they want to serve before filing. After the endorsements are verified, candidates must complete a declaration of candidacy form in the city clerk's office at 320 E. McCarty St. during the Dec. 12-Jan. 16 filing period.
