Jefferson City Public Schools' new school year seems to have been inaugurated successfully.

"The first day of school never gets old," Superintendent Larry Linthacum said.

While a specific update on any transportation issues was not immediately available Thursday, Linthacum said there were a few kinks to be worked out, mostly about making sure addresses were correct.

Linthacum said the day went well overall. He visited all the buildings in the district - and took on the role of crossing guard for a time at West Elementary School.

It wasn't the first time he had taken on the role temporarily, as he did it last year and the year before that. He said it's a good way to meet parents of students who walk to school.

The district's Director of Nutrition Services Dawn Matthews resigned Monday, but Linthacum said the vacancy at the top of the department did not hinder meal preparation and service on the first day.

"The timing of it isn't ideal, but we're posting the position," he said, adding the other staff in the nutrition services office have stepped up to work with kitchen managers at each school to get the ingredients they need.

The superintendent said the position will remain open until filled, and the district will try to hire someone as soon as possible.

The Board of Education approved this year's food and paper goods bids at its meeting Monday. The bids were awarded by lowest price presented. Jefferson City-based Graves Menu Maker is projected to receive $1,223,991 for the year and $385,944 for Kohl Wholesale.
