Quilt auction to mark its 30th year at Rich Fountain

Several special activities are planned Aug. 13 around the 30th Annual Sacred Heart Quilt Auction in Rich Fountain.

Sacred Heart Quilting Club President Doris Neier said the 42 items to be auctioned, mostly quilts, will be displayed on the parish grounds from 10 a.m.-5:30 pm. The auction will start at 6 p.m. with a special presentation.

"We will have a quilt dedication to honor Paul Hasendeck, a Vietnam veteran who is still listed as missing in action," she said. "We are donating the quilt to the 317 Freeburg American Legion in his honor."

There will be 16 large quilts and 16 smaller quilts up for auction this year as well as some other handmade items such as a cherry table made by one of the parishioners who harvested the wood on his farm.

"We have 25 very dedicated quilters who put out quilts each year," Neier said. "Jerry Welschmeyer, whose family were founders of the church 179 years ago, has been our auctioneer all 30 years, and Dolores Eisterhold has also been our clerk these 30 years. We are very fortunate to have a very good group that makes this a success. We say we are very small but mighty proud of it."

All proceeds raised at the auction go to the church and parish school as a way to give back to the community.

"This year is a time to reflect on our quilters now and in the past," Neier said. "Many gave their all until they could give no more. Our mission is to perform deeds of service by contributions and by prayer in supporting the life of the community where we live."
