JCHS students earn dozens of scholarships

Robert Kraus, husband to the late Judy Kraus, a longtime math teacher at Jefferson City High School, speaks of her devotion and dedication to her students and to math and that this is the last year for the Judy Kay Kraus Scholarship. He quipped that she loved math and the challenge so much that on the back of her headstone is a math problem and former students are invited to go by and see and solve it.

Nearly 70 scholarships were awarded Monday during the annual Jefferson City High School (JCHS) Scholarship Lunch.

JCHS Guidance Director Carrie Welch said the application process started in December.

"The students put in a lot of hard work in building their resumes and accolades they had received," she said. "They made presentations to the guidance office, and our job was to distribute those applications to the donors who then picked the recipients."

Welch said the number of scholarships awarded is about the same as in previous years; however, they awarded 44 Mayor Scholarships this year, up from 38 last year. This scholarship awards $1,000 to each recipient.

"We are awarding almost $500,000 worth of scholarships," Welch said.

"These are just local scholarships for Jefferson City High School students. This doesn't include everything else students may receive from the colleges they chose to go to or other scholarships that were awarded throughout their senior year."

Welch said some of the scholarships awarded Monday have been given out for over 25 years.

"These come from businesses as well as individuals," she said.

"We are lucky to have so many who are giving back to these seniors."
