Last year's Horse Plow Demonstration Day showcased the importance of horsepower when farmers plowed their land 75 years ago.
The event will return this year at 10 a.m. on April 29 at the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources' Rocheford Turkey Farm. The event is also sponsored by the MU South Farm Research Center.
"To see the power that the horses have is amazing," said Tim Reinbott, assistant director for the CAFNR Agricultural Experiment Station. "My favorite part to watch is how the horse and mule teams work together with the operator to plow a straight line."
The Horse Plow Demonstration Day is free and open to the public. The demonstrations are part of the Missouri Draft Horse and Mule Association. There will be horse plowing teams from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois.
Attendees will have an opportunity to talk the teams and their drivers.
"The horse owners are always glad to tell anyone about their horses and the plows that they are using," Reinbott said. "Not all horses or plows are alike. You can even get out in the field with them."
The event will take place across from the Rocheford Turkey Farm, 9761 St. Charles Road, Columbia.
