Jefferson City Public Schools race, issue backers report campaign finances

School board candidate Scott Hovis has taken a significant lead in terms of campaign fundraising totals, followed by Lori Massman and Steve Bruce.

Six candidates are running for three seats on Jefferson City Public Schools' Board of Education. The other candidates are Paul Graham, Don Salcedo and Victoria Sterling.

All information reported below on the candidates' election committees and "Citizens Investing J Plus C" comes from the Missouri Ethics Commission (MEC). All the candidates' reported information reflects MEC's eight days before election reports.

"Citizens Investing in J Plus C"

The Citizens Investing in J Plus C committee consists of Jefferson City residents campaigning in support of the Jefferson City Schools District's two-high school plan on the ballot.

Total receipts this election: $152,628.50. As of the 40 day before election report, $69,634. Much of the latest total is overlap with the intial $69,634; because of re-filing to make the committee a political action committee (PAC) as initially intended, initial donors had to have their contributions refunded, and almost all then contributed their same donations back to the committee again later. Since the last report, the committee received $82,994.50.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $65,632.53. As of the 40 day before election report, $15,740.

Amount of money on hand: $32,918.97.

The Civic Progress Committee of the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce gave another $9,000, for a total of $34,000 during the campaign thus far.

Other recent donors in addition to those previously reported include: SSM Health, $4,505; FHC Management, LLC, $4,505; Twehous Excavating Co., $2,703; Jefferson Bank PAC, $2,252; Dick Otke Construction Company, $1,802; Learfield Communications, LLC, $1,802; Septagon Construction Co., Inc., $1,500; Larry Brandhorst, principal architect at Architects Alliance, $1,000; Cary Gampher, principal architect with Architects Alliance, $1,000; Winter-Dent & Company (construction and transporation insurance), $901; and Jefferson City River Terminal, Inc., $901.

"Scott Hovis for School Board"

Total receipts this election: $9,053.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $4,996.80.

Amount of money on hand: $4,056.20.

Donors include: Hilary Black, Communications Manager for Missouri Corn Growers Association, $300; Jefferson City Coca Cola Bottling, Inc., $250; Michelle Jansen, designer with Midwest Block and Brick, $250; Michael Winter, lobbyist, $200; John Ruth, current JCPS board President and insurance representative with the Wallstreet Financial Group, $100; Larry Krummen, Chief Investment Officer with MPERS, $100; Kelli Jones, CFO of the Moneta Group, $100; Deirdre Hirner, Policy Director for American Wind Energy Assocation, $100; Darryl Winegar, President of Midwest Block and Brick, $100.

The committee also received $1,744 in non-itemized monetary donations from persons who gave $100 or less.

"Massman for Education"

Total receipts this election: $6,728.18.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $6,815.14.

Amount of money on hand: $3,460.14.

Donors include: George Ousley, Jr., self-employed entrepreneur, $250; and Ann and Ken Littlefield, $100. Ken is Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer of Central Bancompany, Inc.

The committee also received $1,025 in non-itemized monetary contributions from persons who gave $100 or less.

"Steve Bruce for JC School Board"

Total receipts this election: $4,595.95.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $1,931.16.

Amount of money on hand: $4,099.99.

Donors include: Stephanie Johnson, executive director of the local Boys & Girls Club, and co-chairwoman of Citizens Investing in J Plus C, $150; Carlos Graham, Director of Campus & Community Relations at Lincoln University and incumbent City Councilman for the Fourth Ward, $50; John Ruth, $50.

The committee also received $125 in non-itemized, anonymous contributions from persons who gave $25 or less.

"Paul Graham for School Board"

Total receipts this election: $4,132.50.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $3,912.26.

Amount of money on hand: $2,148.24.

The only new, itemized donor was Blake Markus, a fellow lawyer at Call & Gentry Law Group. The committee received $935 in non-itemized donations from persons who gave $100 or less.

"Friends of Victoria Sterling"

Total receipts this election: $4,080.01.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $2,450.34.

Amount of money on hand: $1,415.67.

The committee did not report any new, itemized donors, but did report $432 in non-itemized contributions from persons who gave $100 or less.

"Salcedo for School Board"

Total receipts this election: $2,549.01.

Amount spent so far (total expenditures this election): $2,038.32.

Amount of money on hand: $253.16.

The only new, itemized donor reported was Chris Cooper, teacher at Helias Catholic High School, $241. Also reported was $595 in non-itemized, additional contributions from persons who gave $100 or less.

Seventh candidate Joshua Harmon will also appear on the ballot on Tuesday, but he died in a car accident in February.
