No 'scary clowns' located yet in Cole County or Jefferson City

The Cole County Sheriff's Office has received a couple complaints of clown sightings, but sheriff's officials said they have been unable to locate any clowns, as of Friday.

"With Halloween around the corner, remember that there are those that wish to play pranks and try to scare people," said Capt. John Wheeler. "We would caution those individuals trying to scare people that they could provoke violent responses by those they wish to scare. This also ties up needed law enforcement resources that could be used elsewhere. We know there will be an increase of people wearing masks and costumes for the next month because of Halloween."

The Jefferson City Police Department has also received "a few calls" about possible clown sightings.

"We assume these callers are referring to local and national media stories regarding clowns that may appear to be frightening, or have some ill-intent," said Capt. Doug Shoemaker. "The short answer is that our agency has not, to this point, had any calls reporting persons dressed as clowns acting in a manner in which could be considered threatening."

Both law enforcement agencies encouraged citizens to contact them with concerns on activity which could be considered legitimately suspicious or potentially threatening in nature.
