Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts find success in recruiting

Representatives of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in five Mid-Missouri counties held a successful joint School Night to Join Scouting effort on Sept. 1.

Boy Scout volunteers and staff of the Five Rivers District, which includes Cole, Osage, Moniteau, Maries and Gasconade counties, welcomed 267 boys into the scouting program.

"I am so happy that we can make a difference in so many lives," said Kelsey Huston, the district executive for the Boy Scouts Five Rivers District.

"Our recruitment would not be nearly as successful without the help of our wonderful schools and community partners who banded around the scouts to make the night amazing."

Girls Scouts recruited 69 new members.

Linn's Cub Scout Pack 17 led the way by recruiting 35 new Cub Scouts, which tripled the size of its pack in one evening.

"This success is a record-breaking recruitment season for our area and to do it in one night is incredible," Huston said.

Scout leaders gathered at Culver's in Jefferson City as the recruiting headquarters.

Culver's donated 10 percent of the proceeds that night to scouting and gave Jefferson City's Pack 4 a custard party for bringing in the most scouts to have ice cream.

Huston said a cooperative effort with Jefferson City School District played a large part in the success of the recruitment drive.
