Man charged in rape at LU dorm

A Jefferson City man has been charged with a rape that occurred early Friday morning on the Lincoln University campus.

Winston Edwards, 26, is accused of committing the crime in Martin Hall on Lee Drive.

On Tuesday, he remained in the Cole County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

According Lincoln University Police reports when an officer arrived on the scene, the victim said she was too scared to go to the hospital because Edwards was still walking the hallway of the residence hall looking for her. She said Edwards had come back to her room and knocked on the door looking for her, but she hid in a closet so he couldn't find her.

Both Edwards and the victim live in Martin Hall, a co-ed dormitory like other LU dorms.

Edwards was found in the hallway of the residence hall and taken into custody. The victim was eventually taken to a local hospital, where she talked with authorities.

The victim said she had met Edwards and the two had exchanged phone numbers. She said he had tried to touch her several times, but she told him no. Edwards asked if he could give the victim a massage, and she agreed. After taking off her clothing, Edwards eventually sexually attacked her and held her down with his body weight. The victim said she attempted to get up but couldn't and repeatedly told Edwards to get off of her.

The victim said once Edwards got off her, he would not let her leave the room, and when she did try to go, he would pick her up and carry her back.

At one point, she promised Edwards to come back if he let her leave. He let her go, and she ran to another part of the residence hall where authorities were eventually called.

At the hospital, medical staff said physical evidence appeared to show the victim had been raped.

When questioned, Edwards said he and the victim exchanged phone numbers the day before, and she had agreed to come to his room at Martin Hall once he was off work. Edwards confirmed the victim had told him no when he attempted to touch her. He also said he had taken off her clothes and massaged her, but while he did admit to touching her sexually during the massage, he refused to talk when the officer asked him if he had intercourse with the victim.
