Man gets probation for charges in two-county chase

A Lohman man charged following a January car chase that began in Holts Summit and ended at Ashland has been placed on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to charges in the case.

Arlend Murphy, 27, was charged in Callaway County Circuit Court with resisting arrest and DWI. Charges of assault on a law officer, failure to drive on the right side of the road, failure to display headlights and speeding were dismissed.

Pursuing officers reported Murphy was traveling at speeds up to 130 mph before police were able to deploy spike strips to puncture his tires.

The chase started when Holts Summit police tried to stop Murphy on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Murphy fled westbound on U.S. 54 to north Jefferson City where he exited onto U.S. 63 northbound toward Ashland.

Highway Patrol troopers joined the pursuit, which reached the southern edge of Ashland. There, Murphy turned eastbound off the highway onto Forsee Road, which is a winding rural gravel road that terminates with no outlet. But once Murphy reached the dead end, the car made a U-turn and headed back to the highway.

Officers were able to set up multiple spike strips in Murphy's path, flattening his tires and slowing his speed to 30-40 mph. From Forsee Road, Murphy went on a northbound trek on U.S. 63 to the Ashland exit, where he turned eastbound on Route Y. The chase ended when Murphy stopped about a mile east of the exit and officers took him into custody.
