MOKANE, Mo. - Honoring the service of those who have served in the U.S. military has become a tradition for the students who attend South Callaway R-II Schools. On Veterans Day, the students took over and conducted one of the most moving tributes in recent memory.

"As a graduate of South Callaway, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, an active member of the Missouri National Guard and the mother of a student in this district I thank you," said Staff Sgt. Maria Witt, who served as guest speaker for the event.

Members of the FFA, FBLA, FCCLA  organized students in all buildings of the district to collect over $1000 for the Mid-Missouri Honor Flight. This substantial donation was the crescendo to a morning filled with activities and tributes.

The day began with a Veterans Breakfast in the High School Agriculture building and moved to an assembly in the High School gymnasium for a student written and led Tribute Assembly. The FFA and FBLE presented not only the United States of America and State of Missouri colors, but also the flags of each branch of the US Armed Services.

The Elementary, Middle School and High School choirs and band presented patriotic music while Elementary Student Council members presented each veteran with a service pin and a handwritten note of thanks for their service.

Business Technology students produced a special video presentation for the occasion in which the administration, faculty, staff and students all expressed appreciation for the sacrifice paid by these local heroes.
