Callaway County officials are celebrating the military service of county residents.

"Last year, we started putting flags around the courthouse," said Doc Kritzer, Western District commissioner of Callaway County. "We are trying to thank those that gave us all the freedom we have."

The interior of the Callaway County Courthouse also recognizes the service given by county residents. In the entryway, visitors can see plaques commemorating military service by Callawegians in each of the major U.S. wars since the Civil War.

Kritzer said Callaway officials recently added plaques carved by a local veteran commemorating each individual branch of the military.

"We wanted to recognize all our branches," said Kritzer. "We thought this was a nice tribute."

Callaway County has a long history of military service, which is one of the reasons that it was recognized as a Purple Heart County in September. Fulton was recognized as a Purple Heart city as well, according to Kritzer.

"At the time our veterans were recognized, there were 24 counties and 80 cities in Missouri that have become a Purple Heart county," said Kritzer. "Counties that wish to become a Purple Heart County can submit a statement honoring the veterans of the county and letting them know that they are appreciated."

According to Kritzer, Memorial Day is the perfect time to reflect on the service given to us by the military.

"I want to be sure that people are recognized and honored," said Kritzer. "We can't ever forget why we have the freedoms we do."
