VFW members to distribute iconic silk flowers this weekend

Poppy time

From the fields of Flanders to storefronts in Fulton, "Buddy" Poppies have been distributed since 1922 by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

"We do it twice a year," said Larry Underwood, commander of VFW Post 2657 at 505 Collier Lane in Fulton. "Poppies are how we make money to give to veterans in need."

On Saturday, members of the local post will be at Mosers Grocery (2020 N. Bluff St.), Walmart Supercenter (1701 N. Bluff St.) and Westlake Ace Hardware, (206 E. Second St.). On Monday, they also will have poppies at Casey's General Store, 1301 U.S. Business Highway 54, Underwood added.

"We really appreciate all the businesses letting us sit out there with the poppies," he said.

As a result of a poem written by Col. John McCrae, dedicated in memory of the soldiers who served, fought and died in France during World War I, poppies have become a symbol remembrance. About 10 million "Buddy" Poppies are distributed annually for donations in every state and other countries, as well.

Each poppy is assembled by a disabled veteran.

VFW members also will distribute them around Veterans Day, Underwood said.

Money raised is divided between national, state and local organization and funds are used to help all veterans, active service members and service families, not just those who are members of the VFW.

"We'll even help a veteran's kids," Underwood added. "We've got a lot of veterans in need, and we don't judge the person. If they show proof they were in the service, we give them money."

Barbecue planned

Members of VFW Post 2657 also will host a barbecue on Saturday from noon until food is gone, according to Underwood.

"It's $20 for a full rack of ribs, and it will be the best ribs you'll ever eat," he added.

The menu also includes half a chicken or a pork steak for $10, and a half-rack of ribs for $11. All the fixings will be provided, too. The dinner will be at the post.
